About this event

The Ardverekie Trio of Beinn a' Chlachair, Geal Charn and Creag Pitridh make up a fine Munro-bagging circuit that really has that feeling of remoteness about it. Just to the south, the Munros that make up the Ben Alder group are notoriously inaccessible, however here, fine estate tracks easily accessed from the A86 near Laggan, provide an easy, albeit lengthy, walk into the foot of the hills. Enroute, we will stop by the beautiful sandy beaches of Lochan na h-Earba where towering overhead are the impressive steep crags of Binnein Shaus. Some of Scotland's toughest rock-climbing routes can be seen from the sandy shores. Aiming up Beinn a' Chlachair first, our ascent is steep and pathless, but with the hardest part of the day already out the way, we can relax a little and enjoy the impressive views across the deep scoop of Coire Mor a' Chlachair. On a clear day, the summit cairn is visible on the far side of the coire long before reaching it. Beinn a' Chlachair or, Hill of the Stonemason, boasts a large summit cairn ideal for sheltering out the wind and taking in the impressive views. The going becomes much easier for a time as we cross the gently sloping grassy plateau towards bealach Leamhain. After a steeper descent amongst outcrops we pick up an old historic stalkers path that leads, part of the way at least, towards Geal Charn. It always seems further than you think to reach this summit with several false tops along the way. Being such a lofty summit, this is a great opportunity to look out over the vast wilderness of the Ben Alder Munros, and further east towards the Cairngorms. From here, Creag Pitridh looks like a mere pimple on the landscape and it's only when viewed up close does it appear slightly more intimidating. A good path however, that zig-zags back and forth, makes very light work of the final 100m of ascent. It's all downhill from here and easy slopes of heather and wild flowers lead us back to our approach path for a leisurely saunter back to Laggan via Lochan na h-Earba.
