About this event

On the north side of the A86 at Newtonmore, the Monadliath mountains stretch out, covering a vast tract of wild and remote land. We are here to search out the 3 Munro summits of Carn Dearg, Carn Sgulain and A' Chailleach. Covering an area larger than the Cairngorm plateau, and rarely dropping below 800 metres, this inhospitable landscape is the haunt of the Mountain Hare and Ptarmigan. In winter conditions, when all traces of paths are concealed beneath a blanket of snow and in poor visibility when the sky merges with the ground, navigating across this vast and featureless plateau is hugely challenging. Having said that, winter is the very best time of year to visit this rolling landscape when the often boggy ground is frozen hard and the peat hags are filled in with snow, smoothing the terrain. This is a tough day and we have much ground to cover. Ice axes and crampons with be essential and an excellent level of fitness will be required. It is not at all unusual to experience temperatures below -15 degrees on the summits and combined with windblown snow and ice, conditions can very often feel highly inhospitable up here. To be ready to take on this challenge you will be an experienced hill walker, and would have been regularly walking the Munros throughout the summer months. You will be accustomed to walking in adverse weather conditions for 8 hours or more with a heavy pack and be physically very fit. It's likely that head torches will be needed on the ascent and/or descent. Your highly experienced guide, a qualified Winter Mountain Leader, will take care of all of the logistics, navigation, and decision making ensuring everyone's safety at all times creating the best possible chance of success. Additional Information Maximum Group size is 6 and online booking is available on the following dates: Wednesday 27th December 23 All participants will require an ice axe and crampons (not micro-spikes). If you do not have your own equipment then I do have a limited supply available to hire at a small additional charge of £10. Please drop us an email with your requirements. Equipment can also be hired locally. You might like to try: Ellis Brigham Mountain Sports in Fort William - 01397 706220 / Scottish Mountain Hire based in Fort William - 07752 587388
