An excellent traverse over rocky ridges bagging two formidable Munros

Fully Booked

About this event

Located 12 miles down the single track road that twists and turns all the way to the head of Loch Etive, looms the towering monster of Ben Starav. Rising steeply up from the shoreline and sporting twin summits the peak is one formidable obstacle. The obvious line of attack, and the one which we will take is the north ridge. With much wet ground low down and steep rocky ground higher up the ridge does not surrender without a certain amount of grit and determination. The reward for all that hard graft is one of the finest summit viewpoints in the whole of the highlands. Being the highest peak for miles around and with Loch Etive nearly 1100m below our feet the sense of height and drama is really something to savour. From the summit we curve around to reach the south east summit before dropping steeply, and following a particularly fine rocky arete over one of Ben Starav's 'tops', Stob Coire Dheirg. We then have the choice of continuing straight on to our second Munro of Glas Bheinn Mhor or detouring to bag the remote outlier of the Ben Starav group, Beinn nan Aighenan. The detour is considerable, adding 2 hours to our day and an additional 500 metres of ascent. But then, do you really want to come all the way back here again to bag this lonely Munro? Either way, in order to reach Glas Bheinn Mhor we first have the lump of Meall na Tri Tighearan to negotiate. Having passed over this and with tired legs, the final climb to the 997 metre summit of Glas Bheinn Mhor will feel like hard work. We will spend some time here enjoying a well deserved break and savouring the 360 degree views before starting our long descent back to Coiletir. If we've timed it right and the weather is on our side, we'll enjoy a glorious sunset over Loch Etive all the way back to the car. Online booking for this event is available on the following dates.
