The perfect winter training ground

About this event
Ben Challum is the ideal Munro for the winter hill-walking beginner. Easy angled slopes and a route where difficulties are few and far between, make this solitary Munro ideally suited for those wishing to make the transition from summer hill-walking into winter. Suitably equipped with ice axe and crampons, our southern approach from Kirkton Farm provides for straightforward walking and the perfect venue to practice moving on snow and ice. As we approach the south summit the landscape changes dramatically and some complex terrain seeks to confound, particularly in poor visibility and when the path, easily followed in summer conditions, is buried under snow and ice. Thankfully, your guide, an experienced winter mountain leader will take care of steering the course onwards, across the narrowing ridge to the true summit at 1025m. Whilst not intended as a practical winter skills day per se, being one of the less arduous Munro outings, there will hopefully be time enough to practice some of the skills and techniques required for travelling safely through the mountains in winter conditions. Additional Information Maximum Group size is 6 and online booking is available on the following dates: Wednesday 10th January 24 All participants will require an ice axe and crampons (not micro-spikes). If you do not have your own equipment then I do have a limited supply available to hire at a small additional charge of £10. Please drop us an email with your requirements.
